The Receiver Era

1973–1977

The years from 1973 through 1977 are often called the receiver era because the stereo receiver became the centerpiece of countless home systems. This was the period of escalating power ratings, feature-packed front panels, and intense competition among major brands such as Sansui, Pioneer, Kenwood, Marantz, Technics, JBL, and Shure. Advertising became bolder, more aggressive, and more confident as manufacturers competed for attention in a fast-growing hi-fi market.

These years also included important side stories in audio history, including the industry’s experiments with quadraphonic sound and the continued rise of cassette and open-reel culture. The ads shown here are only selections from a much larger archive, assembled to showcase some of the most significant and representative campaigns from one of the most recognizable periods in classic hi-fi.
